Established by:  David L. Shearer

Established on:  December 2, 2008

Purpose of the fund:  The primary purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships for women seeking education to re-enter the workforce.

Background:  The Cheryl Shearer Scholarship has been established by members of her family in recognition of her dedication to education.  Cheryl attended elementary and high school in Ventura as well as Ventura College.  She graduated from Chico State College and returned to Ventura County as a teacher and administrator at Oxnard College.  After retiring as the Dean of Business and Technology at Oxnard Community College, she set a goal to somehow recognize and assist the students she considered her “heroes.”  Those heroes were the women who had interrupted their education for some reason and were returning to improve their job related skills and opportunities or to complete a college education.  Cheryl realized the importance of education and was very supportive and encouraging to all re-entry students.
