Katie Deutschman
Turtle Type, Inc.
Katie Deutschman has been serving as a development professional for more than eight years. During that time she has raised more than $30 million for the Southern California community. She specializes in developing strategic funding and capacity building plans to meet clients’ needs and goals; preparing government, foundation, and corporate grant applications; orchestrating annual giving and major donor programs; implementing corporate sponsorship programs; administering community needs and resource assessments; and developing sustainability plans for programs. Her expertise also includes working with clients to design programs, prepare program budgets, draft strategic plans, develop evaluation tools and techniques, and provide effective development trainings for board and staff members.
In 2001, Katie founded Turtle Type, Inc., a fundraising consulting firm that focuses on taking time to understand clients’ needs and find effective solutions to meet fundraising goals. Turtle Type, Inc. applies a steady work ethic that assures clients that they will receive thoughtful services that center on three guiding principals:
- Understand the Mission – Turtle Type, Inc. embraces each client’s mission as the guide for all fundraising plans, goals, and strategies.
- Make a Connection and Build Relationships – Fundraising efforts are designed to help clients not only secure financial resources for immediate needs, but also lay foundations for future support.
- Create a Positive Impression – Every interaction with a potential contributor is an opportunity to make a positive impression and serves as a marketing or outreach opportunity for programs and services.
In 2002, Katie joined K&M Enterprises Research and Fund Development Services as a grant writing consultant, while continuing to serve clients through her consulting business, Turtle Type, Inc. She has worked with large and small nonprofits and government agencies including school districts, county public health departments, social service agencies, art and cultural agencies, and nonprofits that focus on providing a variety of youth services. Katie has worked with a number of clients, including: the Museum of Ventura County in Ventura, CA; the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana, CA; La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, CA; social service agencies such as Project Cuddle in Costa Mesa, CA; the Boys and Girls Club of Oxnard and Port Hueneme; Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Costa Mesa, CA; Riverside County Department of Public Health; and the Ventura County Public Health Department.
Katie is a member of the faculty at the Ventura County Community Foundation. Katie led the grant component of the Bowers Museum’s $16 million capital campaign in 2006, and is serving on the museum’s capacity building team, which is working steadily to identify current capacity limitations and obtain the necessary funds to remove barriers. She is also providing fund development support for the Museum of Ventura County’s $12.5 million capital campaign, and serves on the La Reina High School Advancement Committee and the Saint Mary Magdalen School Marketing Committee. Katie successfully completed the course of study for an Honors English Bachelor of Arts at the University of San Diego in 1998. A native of Ventura County, she resides in Camarillo with her husband and children.
