CAUSE, as the fiscal sponsor for Arts for Action - $7,920 (of $7,920 requested) for the Paint Not Prison Program which offers a positive and creative outlet for at-risk youths and those on probation for graffiti, providing an interactive arts education including fine art skills and public art planning. The program provides a series of workshops over the span of six months that culminate with the production of a public mural planned and created by the participants and volunteer residents of South Oxnard.
Bell Arts Factory - $7,500 (of $7,500 requested) to support the continuation of the Youth Art Programs and Community Room Activities. Bell Arts provides not only free weekly children’s art classes working with various materials but also a positive and creative art environment and experience for children living in Ventura. The Community Room provides a venue for numerous artistic, cultural events organized by arts organizations and community groups countywide.
Buenaventura Art Association - $5,300 (of $15,000 requested) for the PhotoVentura ’09 Project which brings together photographers and artists in the Ventura area to coordinate events, slideshows, workshops, and exhibits for children, families, and the community for the weeks between September 19 through October 10, 2009. Grant funds are designated for workshop instructors, cameras and projector rental for the Kidz Snap! Program.
FOOD Share, as the fiscal sponsor for Empty Bowls Project - $2,500 (of $2,500 requested) to support the production of ceramic bowls made by students from arts classes in local schools, seniors and families at ceramic workshops to be held in schools, churches, community centers and clubs. The finished bowls will then be sold at a public event to raise funds to end hunger. Grant funds will be used to purchase clay and glazes and to cover printing cost for advertisement and creation of flyers. The project aims to produce 1000 bowls for the 1st Annual Empty Bowl Project scheduled for October 2009. Proceeds from the event will benefit FOOD Share and other charities.
Focus on the Masters - $7,500 (of $15,000 requested) for the Marketing and Outreach Initiative, specifically to help enhance the technological capability of the organization to increase visibility and support for its mission in documenting, preserving, and educating the community about the works and lives of accomplished artists from Ventura County through its Learning to See Youth Outreach Program and Tuesday Talk Series.
Oxnard Housing Authority- $7,500 (of $15,000 requested) for the Resident Initiatives Program’s Youth Digital Photography Project, teaching youth16-21 years of age from the Colonia neighborhoods basic digital photography and computer enhancement skills, photo mat and display skills, and event planning. The project will also engage youths and volunteers in creating a virtual photo gallery and developing mobile exhibit cases for traveling displays. The project provides training and skill development for micro-enterprises, employment, and encouragement for youth to continue or return to school.
Santa Paula Art Museum - $7,150 ($7,150 requested) for the Educational Outreach Program to develop a museum educational outreach program, art curricula and teacher training to integrate visual arts instruction into the classroom. The curricula will bring a meaningful interaction with a civic art collection at the Museum and the cultural history of the region to children in Santa Paula’s elementary and secondary schools.
Ventura County Maritime Museum - $3,000 (of $3,734 requested) for the Plein Air Art Student Scholarship Challenge, offering selected high school art students from Oxnard and Camarillo a hands-on learning experience in painting outdoors in a natural setting under the direction of professional adult artists from Ventura County. Art work created by students will be displayed at the annual Plein Air Art Exhibit scheduled for the summer of 2009.
Community Access Partners of San Buenaventura (CAPS-TV) - $5,000 (of $6,000 requested) to expand the 2009 CAPS for Kids Program, offering a six-week digital media production course to students in grades 3-5. Through classroom and hands-on instruction, students will learn digital video production, scriptwriting, editing, teamwork, and knowledge required to create their own digital productions. With guidance on prescribed themes and parameters, students will work in crews to produce 5-minute videos to showcase. Videos will be judged by a parent, teacher/principal, and CAPS-TV representative a là American Idol.
Bell Arts Factory, as fiscal sponsor for Ventura Film Festival - $4,030 (of $10,000 requested) for the Seeds of Life Film Project. As part of the Neighborhood Cinema Program, the project provides creative mentoring and practical skills to aspiring local young filmmakers and journalists at City Corps. The film will document the interaction between youths in juvenile system and seniors as they work together on creating, planting, and maintaining a community garden. The food grown will be harvested and delivered to the Senior Nutrition Program, FOOD Share and other participating charities.
California Literary Arts Society - $4,600 (of $6,500 requested) to support the design and publication of 500 paperbacks illustrating biographical narratives written by teenage boys currently in the juvenile system. In collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme and the Juvenile Justice System, the project will involve the teenagers in writing, editing, illustrating, cover design, and other operations of the publishing process.
California Poets in the Schools - $5,000 (of $10,000 requested) to revamp and strengthen the Ventura Poets of Tomorrow Program. The program aims to increase students’ literacy and language development and appreciation of poetic forms by training poet-teachers to teach the creation and delivery of poetry to students in Ventura County schools. Of the awarded amount, $4,000 is designated for training field poet-teachers.
Kingsmen Shakespeare Company - $2,000 (of $6,400 requested) to cover the cost of a professional scriptwriter to adapt Shakespeare’s The Tempest for use in the Company’s educational tour performances for younger audiences in Ventura County elementary schools and to the general public in selected public libraries.
Performances to Grow On - $7,500 (of $7,500 requested) to expand the Storytelling and Literacy Workshops to Title I schools in the Oxnard Plains. The goal of the workshops is to help teachers, students, and parents utilize the art of storytelling to develop stronger literacy skills in students through improvement in writing, listening, speaking and reading skills. The program will also train teachers and parents to disseminate the learned skills and information to additional teachers and parents.
City of Ventura Cultural Affairs Division - $7,500 (of $10,000 requested) to support ArtWalk and the Youth Media Workshop. Specifically, $5,000 for ArtWalk, which is a signature event that offers regional artists the opportunity to exhibit their artwork to over 30,000 attendees in businesses throughout the Ventura Downtown Cultural District. The remaining $2,500 is to support the Youth Media Workshop which teaches youth to create a multimedia digital story focused around an issue, event or person that is significant in their lives.
Foundation for Educational and Employment Resources Development - $6,000 (of $10,000 requested) for the Life In Ink Project. Working with at-risk and marginalized youth in the Oxnard Plains, the project engages them in the discovery and exploration of the arts by releasing personal emotion through poetry, writing, spoken word sharing and the arts. Of the amount awarded, $5,000 is designated for project’s direct costs including instructor/trainer, workshop supplies and technology, and conferences/forums/seminars.
