2008 Grant Recipients: $20,000
Camarillo Ranch Foundation - $4,000 for the Red Barn Renovation, Restoration and Display Project. Grant funds will be used specifically for collecting and restoring old farm tools and equipment along with framing and mounting original Ranch photos for display in the Red Barn.
Conejo Valley Historical Society - $4,000 to publish a local history book, Ladies of the Conejo, portraying stories about seventeen women who made significant contributions from 1833 to 955 in the Conejo Valley. Grant funds will be used for book cover graphic design, printing, and binding.
Fillmore Historical Museum - $2,400 for the Documenting Our History: Collecting Living Ethnographies Project. Grant funds will be used to purchase equipment specifically to assist the Museum to collect, catalogue, and exhibit over 80 personal stories of members of the Fillmore, Piru, Bardsdale and Sespe communities as they relate to the region.
Museum of Ventura County - $4,000 to support the Becoming Ventura County Exhibition. This is the Museum’s new permanent exhibition focusing on the county’s history, replacing the 1996’s exhibition Ventura County in the New West.
Ojai Music Festival - $2,600 to research, write, and present a comprehensive history of the Libbey Bowl in Ojai and its role in the community. Information to be gathered will include details on the building, how it has changed over the years, and the cultural events and functions that the Bowl has served in the community since its construction in the 1950’s.
Saticoy Historical Society - $3,000 to collect, organize, and preserve historical records including narrative documentaries of individuals, communities, industries and issues as related to Saticoy and the County. Grant funds will be used to complete the Santa Paula Airport documentary, two short narrative interview documentaries for public broadcasting, and conversion of completed documentaries on VHS to DVD for transfer to the Museum of Ventura County.
2001 Grant Recipients: $25,000
Camarillo Ranch Foundation - $4,500 for the Oral History Project that produced a video recording the history of the Adolpho Camarillo Ranch as seen through the eyes of individuals who lived at, worked at, or were associated with the ranch. The video is used to educate visitors to the Ranch.
Elite Theatre Company - $5,000 to support an interview project that records the stories of members of the seventeen families of the homes in Heritage Square. The information will be recorded in written form and finally in the form of a videotape for public viewing.
Rancho Camulos Museum - $3,000 to preserve the oral histories of individuals and families connected with Rancho Camulos since its founding in 1853.
Santa Paula Historical Society - $4,500 to prepare written transcriptions of the society’s 115 oral history interview tapes. These will be made available for public use and education.
Stagecoach Inn Museum - $5,000 to produce a book for third grade children and their teachers in the Conejo Valley. The book will describe geographical features, artifacts left by native peoples and explorers, and the stories of early families and their combined contributions reflecting the events of the Conejo, which helped shape Ventura County.
Ventura County Museum of History and Art - $3,000 to publish the first series of oral interviews conducted in Ventura County, providing a unique window into the lives of Ventura County residents in 1878 and 1879, five years before the publication of the first county-wide history. This project makes available a detailed, first person account of the beginnings of agriculture in Ventura County.
2000 Grant Recipients: $19,514 granted
Ojai Valley Museum - $4,660 to capture the oral histories of five intriguing county residents of the Ojai area.
Oxnard Elementary School District Educational Foundation - $5,000 to help develop and provide an interesting and informative curriculum tracing the roots of the community to its agricultural heritage with stories of families and individuals who made an impact on the community.
Conejo Valley Historical Society - $4,954 for the “Recorded Remembrances: Saving their Sound” program. This program will re-record old tape interviews, professionally transcribe them, and put them in archival, fireproof storage.
Ventura County Museum of History and Art - $4,900 to produce an exhibition focusing on Ventura County’s Jewish Heritage. The exhibition of photographs, documents and artifacts will begin with the arrival of the earliest Jewish residents and trace the growth of this community into the 20th Century.
